Junior Broncos saddle up in search of provincial glory on home ice

A gold medal and a Hockey Alberta banner will be up for grabs in the Town of Olds this weekend as the Junior Broncos host the U15 Female B Provincials

Former Olds Grizzly Jeff Smyth is the head coach of the Junior Broncos. He says “that is the most exciting part. I love coaching my daughter and my son. They’re the best thing for me and I love their compete level. I think all the girls on our team have a really high compete level and we’re excited to show that. Giving back to the community is something important. I’ve always done that since I’ve been little, so it is something really, really important and now that I can give back to my kids, it’s awesome.” Smyth, who is from Three Hills, netted 54 goals and put up 120 points in 174 Alberta Junior Hockey League games for Olds between 2003 and 2006.

Smyth’s daughter Caydence is a hard forechecking right winger for the speedy Jr. Broncos team, and she is looking forward to having one more chance to compete for a banner this season at the Sportsplex. She says “honestly, just to play hockey with my team because we got out of playoffs so I’m really excited to keep playing.”

Left winger Callie Kemmere and the rest of the Jr. Broncos hope plenty of fans come to the rink to cheer them on. She says “I’m really excited just spend time with everyone and just to play because this is like a once in a lifetime opportunity and I think it will be really fun.”

The eight teams participating in the U15 Female B Provincial tourney will be divided up into two four team pools. Olds is in Pool A and the Jr. Broncos first game will be against Sexsmith on Friday, March 27th at noon at the Sportsplex. Also competing will be the Lakeland Jaguars along with two teams from Edmonton, plus others from Calgary, Consort, and Beaverlodge. The gold medal game is slated for 3pm on Sunday, March 29th.
