Synapse Data Center Inc. is in the process of completing the assembly of all the information and technical documents to re-apply to the Alberta Utilities Commission.
As part of finalizing that process, Synapse is reaching out to the community to engage everyone and answer any outstanding questions that may exist.
According to CEO Jason van Gaal, they will be re-applying to the AUC for a 1.4 gigawatt natural gas power plant as part of the proposed connected data centre project in the Town of Olds.
He says they want to make sure their Participant Involvement Program (PIP) meets the highest standards, so they would like community members to choose one of two options for in-person consultation. van Gaal says “would people prefer to have an open house with some subject matter experts speaking on a panel and getting into the weeds on super technical items around noise and emissions, and other commonly asked questions or would people prefer to have smaller group consultations where they can sit down with Paul and myself and ask us questions – very specific questions – that they might have directly.”
The large-scale open house would be hosted on April 1st from 6 until 8pm at a yet to be determined (TBD) venue, while the small group sessions would be hosted at the Pomeroy Hotel between March 31st and April 2nd. The Alberta Utilities Commission closed the initial application by Synapse Data Center for its proposed project in the Town of Olds on March 6th. The letter to van Gaal from the AUC stated that the application by Synapse Real Estate Corp contained significant deficiencies when it comes to meeting requirements for items including environmental evaluation, noise impact assessment, and the participant involvement program. The commission pointed out that it was not making a determination on the merits of the application at that time, but it was assessing whether the information provided meets its requirements.
On January 27th, Synapse Data Center Inc. announced its proposed plans to construct Canada’s largest data centre in north east Olds along Highways 27 and 2-A with a $10 billion dollar private sector investment over an estimated two-year construction period.
