A trio of Rotary Club of Olds members will be stepping onto the ice in the birthplace of curling next month.
Gary Gaudette, Andy Sweetman and Jeff Holmes along with skip Darren Grierson are the Calgary West/Olds rink that will be one of four Canadian entries into the 28th Rotary World Curling Championships. He says “oh for sure they will. So yeah, the competition – there is going to be a few teams that are going to be really tough but I think we can fair very well. Scotland itself, the host committee, they are going to be putting on a great show for us. Apparently they have something lined up almost every night for us to do, so that is going to be really cool.”
Gaudette and company will take on the world at a very unique venue in Scotland. He says “so yeah it is, it is actually really cool. It formerly was a castle but they converted it into a hotel and within the hotel is the curling rink. That is actually where, if you are familiar with Hammy McMillian – he is the latest guy from Scotland and the Scotland curling team – and his parents actually owned it at one point.”
The 10 team championship flight will also include 3 rinks from Scotland and 3 from the United States. The Rotary International curling competition will run from April 2nd to the 11th.
