Mounties are trumpeting the “significant progress” made in reducing copper wire theft across a region of eastern Alberta.
The RCMP has been collaborating for the past year – since August 2024 – on the Hardisty Community Action Plan with energy sector stakeholders, municipalities, and private security providers.
The focus has been on deterring thefts at places like energy lease sites. They have been consistently targeted by crooks because of the “high resale value of copper and precious metals.”
RCMP point out that phase one of the action plan finished up in March and it yielded nearly 20 arrests (17) related to copper wire theft, plus there were marked decreases in thefts for key locations in it including Consort, Coronation, Killam, and Provost.
The Hardisty Community Action Plan featured tactics including enhanced patrols, curfew checks, and covert surveillance operations.

Police ask that both the public and industry partners report any suspicious activity they see around industrial sites by contacting your local RCMP detachment or CRIMESTOPPERS.
