The Mavericks Elite Lacrosse Club has punch their ticket to the Larry Bishop Memorial Cup in Fort Saskatchewan this weekend.
The Mavs advanced to the provincial championship tournament after defeating the Calgary Chill in a best of 3 Central Division Championship series.
The Chill would force the Mavs to the brink in that series, but the local Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League team advanced after winning game 3 by a score of 6-1 on Monday night.
This is now the 2nd time in as many years that the Mavs will appear in the Larry Bishop Cup.
Head Coach of the Mavericks, Trey Christensen, is in his 3rd season with the team and is proud of how the organization has grown.
“I’m just very proud of the players, the organization as a whole. We’ve made strides every single year. It’s never going to be easy. It’s never going to be perfect. But as long as you have that growth mindset and good people around you, good things will happen. So, so far, so good.”
The Mavs won a team record 15 games this regular season, finishing 1st in the Central standings.
Each RMLL division champion will be at the Larry Bishop Cup, Christensen talks about how they can be successful.
“Step one, you got to stay healthy, but beyond that, it’s persistence. Every shift is a sprint, and also it’s a marathon at the same time to where you need that persistence game in, game out, and you always have to be bringing your best. Especially against this caliber of competition. So mentally, you just need to want it, stay with it, and stay focused. And at the end of the day, you just let it lie where it may.”
The Larry Bishop Cup is the key to a spot in the Founders Cup, the Junior B tier 1 national championship tournament in Calgary.
The Mavericks get their tournament started on Friday morning at 9am, when they play the St Albert Crude.
