Mountain View Hospice Society’s annual memorial butterfly release on July 13

The butterfly release for the Mountain View Hospice Society is a beautiful annual ceremony and it is coming up this weekend.

Executive Director Mary Marshall says it starts at 10am on Sunday, July 13th at the Olds College, Botanic Gardens & Constructed Wetlands. She says “it is an amazing facility that we have here in Olds and it is perfectly suited to release our painted ladies butterflies into just the vegetation, and all the flowers around. It is just a beautiful ceremony.”

Marshall adds, this is the fifth edition of the event and they usually have between 70 and 100 people attend. She says “we find that this event is very special for children as well to help cut through the grieving process. There is something about the life cycle of the butterfly and then releasing them that seems to be very peaceful and calming to everyone, but especially children.”

Purchase a butterfly for Sunday’s ceremony online or by contacting the office at 403-586-9992. It is a symbolic way to remember your loved ones but also provide hope to those who may need it.

Marshall notes that the event is open to all community members and you don’t have to purchase a butterfly. They will have coffee, tea, and some snacks available so everyone is welcome.
