Eagles and Generals to face off for Vanberg Cup

The Innisfail Eagles will meet the Lacombe Generals in the North Central Senior Men’s AA Hockey League’s championship series.

A big all-winning weekend for the Birds allowed them to punch their ticket to the next round of the playoffs.

Innisfail grabbed a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five semifinal series when Mike Marianchuk scored in overtime on Saturday in Wetaskiwin. The Eagles took that one 3-2 in OT.

Then it would be handshakes on home ice on Sunday evening as Chance Griffith made 24 saves at the Innisfail Twin Arenas as the Eagles knocked out the Longhorns. Chance Longjohn scored twice as Innisfail secured a series clinching 4-1 win. Innisfail captures the best-of-five series 3-1.

Meanwhile, Lacombe advanced to the league championship series by finishing off a 3-game sweep of the Stony Plain Eagles by winning 3-2 at home on Friday.

According to the league website, “the Vanberg Cup finals will start this weekend and the schedule will be posted as soon as the teams make the arrangements.”
