Grizzlys gear up for homestand, goaltender named Defensive Player of the Week

The Olds Grizzlys can boast about having the current Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week (September 23rd-29th) in their net.
19-year-old goaltender Aidan Fischer from North Vancouver, B.C. backstopped the Black & Gold to back to back victories over the Devon Xtreme and the Bonnyville Pontiacs at the league’s Showcase last week. Olds blanked Devon 5-0 and topped Bonnyville 6-1.
19-year-old defenceman Quinn Abbott is also from North Vancouver. Abbott was impressed with the way Fischer started his career with the Grizzlys. He says “I actually grew up playing with him a bit of pee wee and midget. He’s a really good guy, hard worker. I’m just really proud of him and the goalie that he has become.”
Fischer kicked out 46 of the 47 shots he faced while playing his first two games in the AJHL for Olds.
The Grizzlys will be trying to make it three wins in a row when they start a five game homestand on Friday, October 4th.
Abbott looks forward to hitting the ice at the SportsComplex for just their second home game of the season. He says “I’m very excited. I think we’re really motivated, our group is ready to go and I think we can carry this on for a long time.”
Abbott has contributed 4 assists from the blueline for the Grizzlys in 6 games this season. He is excited to be back in Olds and be a leader for their d-men. Abbott says “I started off this year trying to make the BCHL but it didn’t work out. I’m just happy to be back here. Happy to play a role on this team and help us win. Yeah I’m just really trying to lead by example and make everyone feel comfortable and (William) Patey is doing a great job of that as well. I think we’ve got a really positive group, no problems in the room and everyone gets along well, so it’s really good to see.” Abbott was the highest scoring defenceman for Olds last season with 15 points – including 2 goals – in 46 games.
Olds has a record of 3 and 3 heading into a clash at home on Friday at 7pm against the defending Alberta Junior Hockey League champions – the Calgary Canucks (4-1-1-1).
The Grizzlys will also host the Camrose Kodiaks (4-2-1-0) at 7pm on Saturday, October 5th.
Both of those games can be heard on 96.5 CKFM.
