The theme for Fire Prevention Week this year is “Charge into Fire Safety – Safe Charging is a Superpower” with a focus on lithium-ion battery safety.
Sarah Manton, Fire Prevention Officer for the Town of Olds, highlights the fact that a typical Canadian household has anywhere between 33 to 50 lithium-ion batteries in it. She says “so we should always be using the charger that came with the device, we should be charging on hard surfaces, and we should not be charging batteries that are damaged or getting warm. They should be disposed of with battery recycling. There is not a ton of those facilities in Olds but if you Google them you can definitely find them.”
Join the Olds Fire Department on Wednesday, October 7th from 6-8pm for their annual Open House at the Fire Hall on 65th Avenue. OFD will have a number of interactive stations and all their trucks will be on display so it will be a good time for families and kids of all ages to check it out, according Manton.
She says they will also be going to five schools in the community to supervise fire drills on Wednesday as part of OFD’s “Fire Chief For A Day” program.
