The Olds Grizzlys had an all winning Labour Day weekend as they continue to evaluate players and build their roster for the upcoming Alberta Junior Hockey League season.
The Black & Gold began the preseason with a 5-4 overtime victory in Calgary against the Canucks on Saturday.
On Sunday, Olds would once again top the two time defending AJHL champions and the defending Centennial Cup national junior A hockey champs. The Grizzlys improved to 2 and oh in exhibition play by securing a 6-2 victory at the SportsComplex over Calgary.
18-year-old goaltender (2007) Corbin Sanderman from Three Hills made 28 saves in Sunday’s win. He says “I mean it is good. It is nice that we are gelling early but it is still preseason and they didn’t have a full roster. We had a bit of a stronger roster, more mature roster tonight. So it means a lot, but we have got a lot of work to do still.”
18-year-old netminder (2006) Sharky Nowek from Penticton, B.C. made 44 saves to help Olds top the Canucks on the road on Saturday. Sanderman liked that the team let the goalies play an entire preseason game rather than switching part way through. He says “yeah, I mean it is big. Going in playing half a game, maybe second period, third period it is tough. It is tough to be ready and tough to be warm, so having that opportunity to start and then play the full game is really special.”
The Grizzlys will continue the AJHL preseason on Thursday at 7pm when the Fort McMurray Oil Barons come to town.
