As the sun sets on the Grande Prairie Stompede, World Professional Chuckwagon Association driver Obrey Motowylo found himself in the winners circle.
Motowylo was one of four drivers in the $80,000 dash for cash. The product of Hoadley, Alberta says starting the season off with such a win is almost surreal. He says “you know the horses have been working so good all weekend and I had a hunch and went with my long barrel outfit off the short barrel. I just had a hunch. They were nasty this morning, bucking and playing. I said them four are ready to get it done.”
The championship heat saw Motowylo and his Dynamic Energy Group Ltd. wagon earn the winner’s cheque for $20,000 by crossing the line in a time of 1:17.68. He was 17 one-hundreths of a second faster than High River’s Jason Glass. Preston Faithful from Frog Lake First Nation, Alberta and Sundown Oilfield Services Ltd. was third. Logan Gorst from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan and Northstar Hydrovac Inc. crossed the finish line in fourth.
Jason Glass and his Birchcliff Energy Ltd. walked away the Ralph Vigen Memorial Aggregate Champion. The fastest time on Night 5 belonged to Jamie Laboucane from St. Walberg, Saskatchewan and Wild Rows Pump and Compression Ltd. who got it done in 1:16.19.
