Be smarter than the average bear: Mountainview County issues safety tips as hibernation season ends

Mountainview County is reminding residents to practice some bear safety techniques as hibernation season finally finishes up in Alberta.

Most folks who grew up in bear country know they like to eat, so the County says the simplest way to avoid an encounter is not providing them with a meal. Additionally, property owners are advised to store food waste securely, avoid leaving pet food outside, and keep barbecues clean.

When it comes to bear safety as a whole, whether on your property or while enjoying the outdoors, Alberta Parks says the best method to avoid bear encounters is remaining alert. Officials say fresh tracks, scat, and digs are all indicators that a bear has been in an area.

Mountainview Bear Smart has reported two grizzly bear sightings in the county since the last weekend of April this year.

County officials say any sightings should be reported to Mountainview Bear Smart to help keep both the animals and residents safe; however, Bear Smart says if the presence of a bear or other wildlife poses a safety concern- sightings should be reported to Fish and Wildlife at 1-800-642-3800.
