Olds RCMP say to be wary of unsolicited text messages

A text messaging scam has resulted in Olds RCMP receiving many calls from the public.

Mounties say it is a phishing scam that begins with an unsolicited text message being received.

According to police, the scammers are sending false “RCMP Delivery Notice” messages. The text will say that “the RCMP has been unable to deliver court documents” and it asks people to “please reschedule the delivery to avoid missing your court date by using the link below.”

Olds RCMP point out that the RCMP does not issue notices by text message, however – depending on the situation – RCMP members may correspond with clients via text message. The public is urged to contact their local RCMP detachment to confirm the legitimacy of any message originating from the RCMP.

Police advise everyone not to respond to unknown phone numbers, and do not click on links sent to you from an unverified source. RCMP also say do not provide any personal information, including your name, date of birth, phone number, email, home address, or banking details.

More tips along with information about current scams can be found on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.
